Early childhood is a critical period for developing empathy, self-regulation, and the social-emotional skills necessary for positive interactions with individuals with disabilities. Research indicates that early childhood social-emotional learning programs can strengthen these competencies, while interventions combining educational content with direct contact with individuals with disabilities are particularly effective in promoting positive attitudes toward disability and inclusion. Therapy Dog Story Time integrates these evidence-based approaches through pre-visit educational materials, interactive storytelling, guided discussion, and direct small-group interaction with Tilly, a registered therapy dog who is blind. Learn how this program provides developmentally appropriate opportunities for young children to explore disability and inclusion while fostering empathy and self-regulation.
