This webinar will explore how the fear of dogs develops and how it presents in everyday life. While cynophobia affects people of all ages, we will focus primarily on how it impacts children. The webinar will look at how supportive adults can help or hinder the process by looking at common mistakes that are made. Exposure therapy is an evidence-based intervention for the treatment of phobias. The phobia presents on a spectrum from mild to debilitating. This webinar will explore how to utilize it specifically for the fear of dogs. Appropriate strategies include gradual exposure, cognitive restructuring, relaxation techniques and education about how dogs communicate with their body. There are four ways that this fear develops and Stefani will give case examples of each. The webinar will also present an in depth case study using a four session model. Exposure therapy for cynophobia relies on the assistance of suitable dogs and handlers. We will go over what makes a good partnering team.
