Non-prescription supplements may offer valuable support in managing certain behavioral concerns in pets, such as anxiety, reactivity, or cognitive decline. But how do they actually work, and what does the scientific evidence say about their effectiveness and safety? When should they be considered as part of a comprehensive behavior management plan—and when might they do more harm than good?

This presentation will explore the mechanisms, efficacy, and limitations of commonly used behavioral supplements for cats and dogs, including nutraceuticals, pheromones, amino acids, and herbal preparations. Participants will gain insight into how these products fit within the broader context of behavioral modification, environmental enrichment, and veterinary care.

Beyond the clinical and scientific aspects, the session will also address the impact of behavioral supplements on the human–animal bond. By potentially reducing stress, fear, or aggression in pets, these interventions can enhance mutual trust, safety, and emotional connection between animals and their caregivers. Conversely, unrealistic expectations or misuse of supplements can lead to frustration, disappointment, or even erosion of trust. Understanding the appropriate use of these tools empowers caregivers to make informed decisions that support both behavioral well-being and the strength of their relationships with their companion animals.
