Assistance Dog Loss and Interdisciplinary Support
Date/Time
Date(s) - Thu, Jun 18, 2026 MDT
10:00 am - 11:30 am
In this workshop, participants will explore the profound impact of assistance dog loss on individuals with disabilities, including emotional grief, loss of independence, and disruption to daily routines and social connections. The session will highlight how ancillary providers—social workers, mental health professionals, and healthcare practitioners—and veterinary professionals can collaborate to provide compassionate, informed support. Attendees will learn practical strategies such as validating grief, assessing functional impacts, facilitating connections to peer support, and guiding clients through considerations for a successor dog. The workshop will also address disenfranchised grief, functional challenges, and ways to create safe, supportive environments for clients. Resources from the International Association of Assistance Dog Partners (IAADP) will be shared to enhance client care and professional support practices.
