The Science and Ethics of Sentience: Shaping the Future of Animal-Assisted Services
This panel brings together leading experts in Human–Animal Interaction (HAI) and Animal-Assisted Services (AAS) to discuss the ethical, scientific, and cultural foundations of recognizing animal sentience in professional practice. The conversation centers on a recent international declaration affirming the ethical responsibility of AAS professionals, participants, and organizations to recognize, honor, and actively consider the sentience of animals in all aspects of service provision. Recognizing sentience as a foundational ethical principle challenges traditional anthropocentric frameworks and advances welfare-centered, relational models of practice. This discussion invites reflection and questions on how sentience awareness shapes education, clinical ethics, policy, and professional standards across AAS disciplines.
