This lecture explores the animal origins of ADHD by tracing its behavioral features across the tree of life. Many behaviors associated with ADHD in humans—such as distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity—are also found in nonhuman animals. I will highlight when and in which species these traits appear, and why they have been adaptive in specific ecological contexts. Understanding ADHD through this evolutionary lens not only deepens our scientific perspective but also opens new pathways for clinical management. Ultimately, these insights help to destigmatize ADHD by reframing it as part of a broader, adaptive legacy rather than a purely pathological condition.
