Assistance Dogs Across the Lifespan: Benefits, Barriers, and Welfare Considerations
Date/Time
Date(s) - Wed, May 12, 2027 MDT
9:00 am - 10:30 am
Presented by Amanda Salmon, PhD
This webinar draws on Dr Amanda Salmon’s published research on assistance animals, particularly assistance dogs, ageing, disability, access, and animal welfare. The presentation will consider the ways assistance dogs can support people beyond trained tasks, including through independence, daily functioning, wellbeing, social connection, and participation. It will also explore practical and ethical challenges that can arise across the lifespan, including access barriers, costs, care responsibilities, ageing with an assistance dog, and moving into aged care. A central focus will be the need to consider both the person being supported and the welfare of the dog. The webinar will also briefly discuss psychiatric assistance dogs as a growing area where public understanding, access issues, reliance, and welfare require further attention. Implications for psychologists, researchers, aged care providers, and human-animal interaction professionals will be discussed.
