Animals as Medicine: Pets Are Wonderful Support in the Early AIDS Pandemic

This webinar traces how companion animals provided comfort, resilience, and meaning during the darkest years of the AIDS crisis, and how San Francisco’s pioneering Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) movement became a lasting legacy of love, advocacy, and community care.

Dr. Ken Gorczyca, DVM, is a veterinarian, death doula, and artist who pioneers compassionate, heart-centered approaches to companion animal end-of-life care. He is also the founding veterinarian of Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS), a transformative San Francisco movement that redefined the human–animal bond during the AIDS pandemic
