Service animals play a unique role in the life of a pet owner who has disabilities. Therefore, service animal owners experience unique loss and grief challenges when they are facing the decision to retire, euthanize or lose their service animal through the passing of the animal. This presentation will address this topic from two perspectives. It will discuss recent research pertaining to the impact of loss for service dog handlers and also one handler’s professional experience and her personal journey with her two service dogs.
